Alstroemeria

Alstroemeria

Also known as a Peruvian Lily, or Inca Ice. A long-lasting member of the lily family, especially loved for the intricately detailed blossoms in attractive funnel or trumpet like shape. Originally native to the cool mountain regions of the Andes, alstroemeria, also known as the lily of the Incas, is a beautiful flower with striped, streaked or freckled petals. Alstroemeria come in a vast array of colours, including orange, pink, red, purple, yellow, white and salmon. Alstroemeria is a common element in many bouquets thanks in part to their long vase life of up to 2 weeks.

Anthurium

Anthruium

Also known as Laceleaf, anthurium are glossy tropical blooms that regularly come in shades of red, pink, coral, and white - with red being the most popular colour. While anthurium can be grown as an indoor plant, Ital Florist typically uses cut stems of anthurium in a variety of designs, including sympathy flowers. Typically, anthurium will last a long time in a vase of regularly refreshed water.

Aster, Matsumoto

Matsumoto Asters Also known as the Japanese aster, this flower features lengthy stems topped by soft, bright coloured petals available in a variety of colours including purple, red, hot pink, pink, purple, lavender and white. Petals typically surround a bright yellow center making them somewhat daisy-like. Asters are the birth flower for the month of September and symbolize “variety”. Matsumoto asters are what florists often call a 'filler flower', used extensively in many flower arrangments as part of a supporting cast - rarely the main star, but always important to the overall production! 

  • Matsumoto asters are typically available year round at Ital Florist with some seasonal fluctuations. Late summer and fall are the best seasons.

Baby's Breath

Baby's Breath

Gypsophila is flower plant that's a member of the carnation family, and is most commonly known by the name, "Baby's Breath" or sometimes "Maidens Breath". It is a dainty and long lasting 'filler flower' that is used in many bouquets, often paired with roses. Baby's breath is bushy plant with plenty of small, delicate flowers coming off of its branches. It is originally from Central and Eastern Europe. The small flowers are usually either white, and to a lesser extent, pink.

Bells of Ireland

Bells of Ireland

Bells of Ireland aren't actually from Ireland! They are native to Turkey, Syria and Caucasus. Also known Moluccella laevis or shellflower, they usually appear to have spikes of white flowers and bright green calyces. They can grow in harsh conditions with poor soil. Bells of Ireland are supposed to mean luck in the language of flowers. Bells of Ireland are one of the finest annual foliage plants often used in mixed bouquets and arrangements. Stems can be tall, showing lime green spires adorned with bell shaped blooms.

Bird of Paradise

Bird of Paradise Also known as the Japanese aster, this flower features lengthy stems topped by soft, bright coloured petals available in a variety of colours including purple, red, hot pink, pink, purple, lavender and white. Calla Lily

Calla Lily

The calla or Zantedeschia is native to Southern Africa, and it has now been introduced to most regions worldwide. Although not considered true lilies, the calla lily's distinctive flowers come in many beautiful colours, including classic white (a favourite for weddings), yellow, orange, pink, rose, lavender and dark maroon. Calla lilies can be found in gardens, as an indoor plant, and as popular cut flowers in bouquets and arrangements.

Carnation

Carnation

Carnations are popular, affordable and long lasting flowers available in a rainbow of colours. They are are found in many bouquets and arrangements for all occasions year round. The carnation or Dianthus caryophyllus is likely native to the Mediterranean region. Its flower has distinct characteristics such as having branched or forked clusters and serrated petals. The carnation has an interesting Greek origin story/myth. Some say carnation means fascination, distinction and love.

Carnation (Miniature or Mini)

Miniature Carnation

The miniature carnation or Dianthus caryophyllus is a small flowering plant that originates from Eurasia. It has narrow green leaves and grows as a round clump of petals. Clusters of colourful, long-lasting blossoms are found on each stem. Like their name suggests, mini carnations are smaller than their sister flowers (carnations) and are otherwise very similar. The name carnation is from the Latin “carnis” meaning flesh, alluding to the pale pink colour (one version) of the flower. In Greek Dianthus means the flower of Jove. Mini carnations are popular as they fit in very well with other flowers in a variety of designs.

Casablanca Lily

Known for their special beauty, Casablanca lilies or Lilium 'Casa Blanca' are oriental hybrid lilies with fragrant, 8-10 inch, outward facing, bowl-shaped pure-white flowers with lovely curved petals that contrast beautifully with the red-orange anthers found within. A single stem may produce upwards of 6-8 blossoms. Many horticultural professionals consider the Casablanca lily to be the best, most beautiful lily available. Please note that this exceptional flower may be toxic to cats.
