March 8 - International Women's Day, February 2013
La Festa della Donna, or International Women's Day is celebrated on 8th March. It began in 1908 to commemorate the 129 women who died in a fire in a factory in Chicago in that year, and also commemorates two other international events: a strike by women garment workers on 8 March 1857 in New York, which led to the foundation of the first women's union in the US, and a strike by Russian women on the same day in 1917.
It is traditional on this day to give yellow Mimosa flowers to women as a sign of respect and solidarity. Women give Mimosa to each other as well.
Mimosa (acacia dealbata) was introduced to Europe from Australia in 1820. It is probably the first tree to flower - as early as January - and its yellow flowers cheer up the winter landscape.(taken from http://www.livornonow.com/)

Toronto, January 29, 2013 Italo Paris and Ester Mauro, owners of Ital Florist Limited have come to an agreement with Jim Lye and Janet Lye and purchased Tidy’s Flowers Inc. Both Lye’s have been retained by Tidy’s Flowers and will continue to oversee the daily operations.
The combined synergies of this group, provide Ital and Tidy’s with an incredible opportunity to expand their already strong presence in the Greater Toronto Market. Eligio Paris, President of Ital Florist Limited said, “This union allows us to continue to grow Ital Florist from our Greater Toronto Area (GTA) base by aligning ourselves with Tidy’s Flowers, the oldest flower company in Canada with an outstanding reputation for quality floral products and reliable service, particularly serving the Toronto downtown core customers.”
Italo Paris and Ester Mauro are the second generation of family owners of Ital Florist. They explain, “Joining forces with Tidy’s Flowers will allow us to leverage our marketing expertise with Tidy’s long track record for serving Toronto customers. In addition, with a team of professional floral designers and customer service representatives that has doubled to over 40, we can easily manage the largest of events; corporate, wedding, bereavement in addition to all everyday occasions.”
Siblings Jim and Janet Lye, co-owners of Tidy’s, said: “Tidy’s Flowers and Ital Florist serve complimentary markets and customers throughout not only the GTA but across Canada. This merger fits with our strategy to grow our business through strong alliances as well as through internal growth”

Times are always changing and our industry is no different.
As florists we provide delivery service for our clients in town, over borders and across the ocean. Getting this done is not always easy. A group of independent florists is looking at ways to change the economics of these wires services as well as looking at different solutions for our daily challenges in our independent retail florist operations.
